How to make garlic cheddar cheese dip

In a bowl, combine shredded/grated cheddar, mayonnaise, pressed garlic and a pinch of black pepper. Mix everything well.

When ready, stir in finely chopped chives and you are ready to serve!

Note: I usually use 2 (quite large) garlic cloves to make this garlic cheddar cheese dip. Now because some might prefer a lighter garlicky taste, this recipe calls for one clove only.

I suggest you taste it when ready and add more if you feel like it is needed.

It is important to use garlic press in this recipe as the pressed garlic blends well in the dip.

If you use a knife to finely chop it, you will not get the same result when it comes to taste.

There is no need to add any salt when making this garlic cheddar cheese dip.

The reason is simple: Cheddar cheese is salty enough to flavor the whole dip.

Tips for making garlic cheddar cheese dip

  • As mentioned, this can be used as a spread over toasted bread or crackers. I like serving it that way as it is less messy, and you avoid double-dipping. If you think it is a lot of work, I assure you it is not really. You just choose what you like to serve it on (crackers, toasted bread or just freshly sliced French baguette) and spread some of this garlic cheddar cheese dip over and you are ready to serve. To prepare 16 takes about 10 minutes. That’s not bad, is it?

  • A healthier choice of dippers would be celery. It goes really well with this dip and helps balance the garlic flavor.
  • If you have trouble finding fresh chives, you can omit this herb.
  • Walnuts are used mostly as garnish and you won’t taste much of them. You can also omit them, if preferred.

This garlic cheddar cheese dip recipe is easy, quick and tasty. Serve it as a dip or spread over a toasted baguette or crackers. Ready in 5 minutes!

Prep Time 5 minutes

Total Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 ounces cheddar cheese, grated (150 grams)
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 garlic clove, pressed (see note 1)
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • fresh chives, finely chopped (see note 2)
  • 5 walnuts, roughly chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine cheddar, mayonnaise, pressed garlic and a pinch of black pepper. When ready, stir in chives.
  2. Serve as a dip or spread.
  3. Optional: Top each canape with roughly chopped walnuts or sprinkle over the dip.

Notes

  1. I usually use 2 garlic cloves but some might find it too strong. I suggest you start with one and add more, if needed.
  2. In this recipe I used about a tablespoon of chopped chives. You can add more or less, if you like. The chives can be omitted completely if you don’t have them on hand.
  3. This dip can be served as a spread over canapes, toasted bread or crackers. You will get about 16 canapes out of this recipe. When serving as a dip, you will get about ¾ cup.
  4. When using this dip/spread for canapes add extra 10 minutes to the overall time.

Wow, I love the flavor profile and the dip is so easy to prepare. When a recipe calls for a garlic press, I usually grab my microplane grater and grate away. I’m cheap and avoid buying single use tool, LOL. If you are like me, you may want to use the same trick. 🙂
