How to connect to eduroam WiFi (2024)

eduroam is our recommended wireless service for students and staff, and gives you internet access at Oxford and when you're visiting other participating universities

Windows

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

  1. Ensure that you have set aremote access passwordand know what it is
  2. Connect to the internet using 4G,Oxford Wireless LAN (OWL)or a home WiFi connection
  3. Download and open/run theeduroam installer
  4. Click through the installation screens, entering your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UKand your remote access password when prompted

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

Alternative method

If eduroam is available at your location:

  1. Selectthe wireless network icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select eduroam. Click Connect
  2. Enter your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UKand yourremote access password
  3. At the Continue connecting? prompt, select Show certificate details
  4. If the server thumbprint (SHA1) is “B3:55:33:68:07:F9:B6:06:40:BA:0C:24:38:58:5E:59:9C:0B:DB:40" then select Connect, otherwise do not connect and contact theService Deskto check for anyrogue networks

If you are setting up eduroam elsewhere:

  1. Select the WindowsStart menu>Settings>Network &Internet
  2. Select Network and Sharing Center >Set up a new connection or network >Manually connectto a wireless network
  3. Provide the following details:
    Network name

    eduroam

    Security typeWPA2-Enterprise
    Start this connection automaticallyYes
  4. SelectChange connection settings
  5. Select theSecurity tab >Settings >Configure...
  6. Ensure Automatically use my Windows log-on name and password (and domain if any) is not ticked
  7. Confirm all settings then selectClose

macOS

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

  1. Ensure that you have set aremote access passwordand know what it is
  2. Connect to the internet using 4G,Oxford Wireless LAN (OWL)or a home WiFi connection
  3. Use the Safari web browser to download and open/run theeduroam installer
  4. Click through the installation screens, entering your Oxford username in the formatabcd1234@OX.AC.UKand your remote access password when prompted

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

Alternative method

If eduroam is available at your location:

  1. Selectthe wireless networkicon from the menu barand selecteduroam
  2. Select Mode:Automatic
  3. Provide your Oxford username in the formatabcd1234@OX.AC.UKandremote access password
  4. SelectJoin
  5. You will be asked to trust the radius.oucs.ox.ac.uk certificate (Entrust), select "Accept" or "Trust"

iOS

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

  1. Ensure that you have set aremote access passwordand know what it is
  2. Connect to the internet using 4G,Oxford Wireless LAN (OWL)or a home WiFi connection
  3. Use the Safari web browser to download and open/run theeduroam installer
  4. After the Profile Downloaded notification, open your Settings app, select Profile Downloaded1and install the eduroam profile
  5. Enter your Oxford username in the formatabcd1234@OX.AC.UKand your remote access password when prompted

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

Alternative method

If eduroam is available at your location:

  1. Selecteduroamfrom the list of available wireless networks
  2. Enter your Oxford username in the formatabcd1234@OX.AC.UKand use yourremote access password
  3. If asked to trust the radius.oucs.ox.ac.uk certificate (Entrust), select "Accept" or "Trust"
  4. SelectConnect

Android

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

Notice: Remove any existing eduroam configuration

If you have used eduroam on your device before,remove any existing eduroam configurationand the eduroam CAT app if it is installed.

  1. Ensure that you have set aremote access passwordand know what it is
  2. Install and run thegeteduroam app by SURF Cooperative from theGoogle Play Store
  3. Search forUniversity of Oxford, thenNext
  4. Enter your Oxford username in the formatabcd1234@OX.AC.UKand your remote access password when prompted
  5. Select CONNECT TO NETWORK

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

Alternative method

Most Android devicescan be set up to connect to eduroam in the following way:

  1. Selecteduroamfrom the list of available wireless networks
  2. When prompted provide:
    EAP methodPEAP
    Phase 2 AuthenticationMSCHAPV2
    CA CertificateUse system certificates
    Domainox.ac.uk
    IdentityYour Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UK
    Anonymous IdentityLeave this blank (useanonymous@ox.ac.ukif you encounter issues)
    PasswordYour remote access password
  3. Select Connect
  4. Your phone should connect to eduroam when it is available. If eduroam is in the available networks list but does not connect automatically then select eduroam, then Connect

ChromeOS

Recommended method

Follow these instructions to set up your eduroam connection for the first time:

  1. Ensure that you have set aremote access passwordand know what it is
  2. Connect to the internet using 4G,Oxford Wireless LAN (OWL)or a home WiFi connection
  3. Download and open/run theeduroam installer
  4. Click through the installation screens, entering your Oxford username in the format abcd1234@OX.AC.UKand your remote access password when prompted

Your device should now connect automatically whenever it can see the eduroam service.

  1. In the Settings app select Network > Add connection > Add WiFi...
  2. When prompted provide:
