Lady Hornets capture second at NTL Championships (2024)

ATHENS — The NTL Championships for Track & Field were held here on Friday, May 10 — with the Wellsboro Lady Hornets taking home a second-place finish as a team while Williamson took fourth, and Mansfield finished in fifth place overall in a field of 10 teams.

Taking home the girls’ team championships was the Athens Lady Wildcats with a score of 154 and were followed by Wellsboro (104), Northeast Bradford (79), Wyalusing (79), Williamson (64), Troy (57), NP-Mansfield (52), Canton (51), Towanda (46) and Sayre (11).

Wellsboro finished just 50 points out of first place during the championship meet and had three overall wins and 10 top-10 finishes while putting together an all-around stalwart day during the meet.

Headlining the winners for Wellsboro was the 4x100-meter relay team of Piper Hoprich, Sophia Yoder, Jordan Rumsey, and Emily Richardson, who clocked a time of 52.37.

Wellsboro also cracked the top five in the 4x800-meter relays, with the team taking fifth with a time of 11:46.02.

Also capturing wins during the day was Sarah Seeling in the javelin, where she tossed a 104-11.00, which was head-and-shoulders above the second-place finisher by eight feet.

Seeling also turned in strong performances in the hurdle events, where she finished in fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles (51.80).

She was joined by Annika Gehman, who turned in a strong all-around day in the jumping events with a win in the triple jump (35-01.00), a third-place finish in the long jump (15-11.00), and a second-place finish in the high jump (4-10.00), and was followed in the event by Kristina Belz (4-08.00) who took third in the event.

In the sprinting events, Hoprich added to her first-place performance in the 4x100-meter relay with a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash (12.42) and a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash (26.36).

Freshman standout Lauren Kosek led the way in the distance runs with a third-place finish in the 1600-meter run (5:27.14) and a third-place finish in the 3200-meter run (11:35.91).

In the throwing events, Wellsboro’s Hannah Gilmour finished in seventh place (84-08.50), Christina Logsdon took sixth in the javelin (92-10.00) and Grace Harlan claimed seventh in the shot put (28-06.75).

Behind Wellsboro was the Williamson team, who turned in a fourth-place performance with a score of 64 and were headlined by two overall winners, nine top-five performances, and 16 athletes finishing in the top 10 in events.

Taking an overall win for the Lady Warriors was junior Olivia Meisner, who took the top spot in the shot put during the day with a 33-10.50 throw and was followed by Sayde Loucks (27-10.50) — who finished in 10th place for the Warriors.

Also leading the way in the throwing events were Alexis Shenk (81-05.00), who took ninth in the javelin, and Mikayla Anderson (72-08.00) finished 13th in the discus.

The other winner for Williamson on the day was sophom*ore Madalynn Bailey, who took first in the long jump with a mark of 16-06.50 and was followed in the event by Anna Lee (15-04.00) finishing fifth and Madison Schoonover (14-01.40) taking home seventh-place.

Schoonover also grabbed fifth in the triple jump (31.00.50).

Bailey also recorded a top-10 finish in the 800-meter run (2:41.51) with a sixth-place finish and was followed in the top-10 in the event by Torrina Stratton (2:43.48) in eighth place.

In the sprinting events, the Lady Warriors received a top-10 finish from Jade Colwell in the 100-meter dash (13.28) and a top-five finish in the 200-meter dash from Colwell (28.23) while Anna Lee took 10th in the 400-meter dash (1:08.93).

In the distance runs, freshman Calre McKee took the top finish in the 3200-meter run for the Lady Warriors with an eight-place finish in a time of 13:11.36.

In the hurdle events, freshman Aubrey Wells turned in a top-five outing with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (17.31) while Kylee Stone took 14th in the 300-meter hurdles (59.03) and also finished in ninth in the triple jump (29-10.75).

In the relays, Williamson’s 4x100-meter relay team took second place (53.40) as well as the 4x800-meter relay team (10:23.04) who after leading for a majority of the race were edged by Towanda in the waning moments.

The final area team competing in the NTL Championships were the NP-Mansfield Lady Tigers, who finished just five points behind Troy in the seventh-place spot with 52 team points.

NP-Mansfield had no overall winners on the day but had a slew of athletes reach top-five and top-10 performances with 17 top-10 finishers and six top-five finishers during the championship meet.

Leading the way for the Mansfield squad was Tierney Patterson, who in the throwing events turned in a second-place finish in the discus (95-06.00), a 16th-place finish in the javelin (71-06.00), and an eighth-place finish in the shot put (28-04.00) and was the top thrower for Mansfield on the day.

In the jumping events, Mansfield received a second-place performance from Madilynn Scott in the triple jump with a 32-04.50 mark, and was followed by Nora Furry (30-07.75) in sixth-place in the event while also turning in an eighth-place performance in the high jump (4-04.00),

Also cracking the top 10 in the jumping events was Carolyn Cherwinski (14-00.00) in the long jump.

In the relays, Mansfield finished sixth in the 4x800-meter relay (12:30.94), fifth in the 4x400-meter relay (4:37.50), and sixth in the 4x100-meter relay (54.22).

The top performer in the hurdle events was Furry, who captured 15th place with a time of 19.80.

In the distance runs Mansfield had their best showing with a handful of top-10 finishes during the three events.

In the 3200-meter run, Jaci Fairchild took the sixth spot with a time of 12:44.11 and was followed in the top 10 with a ninth-place performance from Madelynn Johns, who grabbed ninth-place with a time of 13:16.32.

In the 1600-meter run, Mansfield had three top-10 finishers and was led by Johns in fourth place (5:41.80), Addison Farrer in fifth place (5:43.23), and Fairchild in seventh place (5:50.50).

The top finisher for Mansfield in the 800-meter run was freshman Alivia Lisowski, who took 12th place with a time of 3:00.45.

In the sprinting events, Anna Kennedy cracked the top five in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.24, while Gabby Bubeck took seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.84.

In the 400-meter dash, freshman Maryn McCarthy captured the top finish for the Lady Tigers and finished in eighth with a time of 1:08.04.

All three teams will have several athletes competing this upcoming Thursday, May 16, and Saturday, May 18, at Williamsport High School for the 2024 PIAA District 4 Track & Field Championships.
