NBA Teams' Picture/Logo-thing... - Sitcoms Online Message Boards (18)NBA Teams' Picture/Logo-thing...

What I mean by "Thing" is, like, "Spurs", or "Raptors", the animal, or name that IS the team. Kinda hard to explain, but I think you know what I mean. Anyways, I've been looking at them all, and I need to ask about these teams:

Detroit Pistons - It's a horse in the logo, but a piston is a machine-thing, so, what would it really be?

Denver Nuggets - There's a Mountain in the logo, (I assume because Denver's in Colorado, and the Rocky Mountains, y'know) but "Nugget". ??? Does it mean a Gold Nugget?

Dallas Mavericks - There's a horse in the new logo, and a cowboy hat in the old logo. So does it mean a cowboy, or what?

Los Angeles Clippers - Does it mean the Clipper ships?

Los Angeles Lakers - I have NO idea what a "Laker" is. What is it?

New Jersey Nets - Is it talking about a Basketball Hoop Net?

New York Knicks - I know "Knick" is short for "Knickerbocker", and I looked up "Knickerbocker", and it says something about Dutch Settlers in New York. Is it talking about that?

Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers - Where did the "76" derive it's name? Did Philadelphia have a really good player whose jersey number was 76 or something?

Portland Trailblazers - What is a Trailblazer?

Utah Jazz - Are those flames in the logo? Does it mean the musical Jazz, or is it just suggesting their team is as smooth as the musical Jazz?

All I know from that is the L.A. Lakers did begin in Minnesota. And Minnesota is has a lot of Lakes. I think it's called, "The Land of a Thousand Lakes" or something like that.

Now this one I know... A Trailblazer is, simply put, one who blazes a trail, a pioneer, if you will. Since Portland is the location of the end of the Oregon Trail (well, Oregon City, if you want to get technical), it is only appropriate.

Edit: Also, the Philadelphia 76ers get their name from 1776, the year that the Second Continental Congress met and drafted the Declaration of Independence.

The Utah Jazz has a mountain in their logo and the team is called the Jazz because of the music. The team was known as the New Orleans Jazz before they moved to Utah, and of course jazz is heavily played down in New Orleans.

Hmm, so the Jazz is the music, and a Trailblazer is a pioneer; thanks. And, can anyone else confirm the 76'ers thing that Pedantic said? And could someone confirm the "Lakers" theory stated by whoever said it? Still need:

Detroit Pistons - It's a horse in the logo, but a piston is a machine-thing, so, what would it really be?

Ok, the New York Knicks were named named for the Dutch Settlers in New York, but it's really talking about the pants that they wore, "knickerbockers", that rolled up a little below the knee.

The Los Angeles Clippers were named after the famous sailing ships, the "clippers."

The Denver Nuggets were named because of its location in the Rocky Mountains and because of the 19th Century gold rush in the area.

The New Jersey Nets were named after the basketball hoop net, one of the most important parts of the game.

The Dallas Mavericks were named because of "Texan image" of cowboys riding horses.

The Detroit Pistons were named after the automotive part, since Detroit is known as the "Automobile Capital of The World." I'm guessing they used a horse in their logo (1995-2001) because before there were cars, people used horses to get from one place to another.

The Philadelphia 76ers were named for the year and location of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The Los Angeles Lakers were named for the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" when the franchise was in Minnesota, but when the team moved to Los Angeles, they chose not to change the team name.

I hope this clears up all the confusion. NBA Teams' Picture/Logo-thing... - Sitcoms Online Message Boards (50)
