World's Easiest Apple Crumble (1)

"Have you shared this one on the blog?", my husband asked a few days ago. We had spent the day with family and halfway through the afternoon, I decided a sweet treat would be nice.

I spotted the bowl of pink-blushed golden apples and knew exactly what I'd make. I flipped on the oven and by the time the little bell went off, letting me know it was pre-heated, my dessert was ready to go.

Thirty minutes later, Scott and I were dolloping bowls full of warm apple crisp with big scoops of vanilla ice cream. We presented them to our relaxed guests, who hadn't even had time to miss us and, well, let's just say there were exclaims of delight. And then silence ... as everyone savored the simple, delicious dessert.

I've been making this apple crumble for so long, I could probably do it in my sleep. When Scott asked if I'd shared in here at The Café, I felt like I'd been keeping a secret from you. A really wonderful secret. You see, any time I need a super fast, sure-to-please dessert, this is my go-to recipe. It's made with the most basic ingredients; apples, butter, sugar and flour.

That's it ... usually.

This time, I had a bit of fun with my old stand by recipe and added a handful of crushed Biscoff cookies to the crumble mixture. It didn't take much extra time but was a delightful variation. I also used individual shallow serving dishes, drizzling each one with a bit of my Ridiculously Easy Caramel Sauce. Voila! A humble little dessert istransformed into special-occasion fare!

Easiest Apple Crumble

World's Easiest Apple Crumble - so easy and so... delicious!

Author: Chris Scheuer

World's Easiest Apple Crumble (5)

Course:Dessert

Ingredients

  • 5-6medium Golden Delicious apples**about 6 cups, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1cupsugar
  • 1teaspooncinnamon
  • 1stick butter4 ounces, melted
  • 1cupall-purpose flourpossibly a bit more
  • 12Biscoff*** cookiescrushed
  • pinchof salt

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350˚F. Spray a 9-10-inch round or square baking dish or 6-8 individual baking dishes* with cooking spray.

  2. Pour apples into baking dish(s), mounding a bit on top, if needed. Sprinkle with ½ cup sugar and the cinnamon. (If you want a less sweet dessert, omit this ½ cup sugar and just use the ½ cup sugar specified for the crumble topping.)

  3. Combine flour, ½ cup sugar, Biscoff crumbs and salt. Stir to combine.

  4. Add butter and stir with a fork until large, wet crumbs form. If mixture is too wet and doesn’t form crumbs, add a bit more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time. Stir with fork after each addition until large crumbs do form.

  5. Take crumb mixture with your hands and pile on top of apples, trying to keep fairly large crumbs intact. If using individual pans, divide mixture evenly. Place pan(s) on a large sheet pan.

  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until crumbs are golden brown. Remove from oven. Serve warm with ice cream, if desired and Ridiculously Easy Caramel Sauce drizzled on top.

Recipe Notes

* ~ I used -inch ceramic, individual baking dishes and got 6 servings. If your dishes are smaller, you will probably get 8 servings.
** ~ You can actually use any good baking apple, though I wouldn’t use a super hard apple like a Granny Smith. I love baking with Golden Delicious or Ginger Gold apples.
*** ~ More and more grocers are beginning to carry these delicious Belgian cookies. They have them now at my most common market. Walmart and Target also carry them. If you can’t find Biscoff, you can make the recipe without. Just follow the directions and omit the cookies. If you have another favorite cookie, you could substitute it for the Biscoff cookies. I think Lorna Dunes or Nutter Butters or even graham crackers would be wonderful. I've also made this crumble lots of times without any cookies and it's fantastic.

This is sooooongood. I used graham crackers as I had no Biscoffs. This is a wonderful way to make a warm, comforting apple dessert. It made my wife very happy.

Next up I will try peaches.

Thanks for all your great work at the cafe!

I noticed that the recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Does the cinnamon go in with the apples or does it go in the crumb mixture? Thank you!

I just pinned Cathy (Wives with Knives) Biscoff cookies that she got from you. Now, I'm pinning this. I make crumbles often, but never thought to add Biscoff cookies-- that I happen to have in my pantry. What a brilliant and delicious idea!

This was so easy and delish! However, I did notice that you had 1/2 c sugar twice in the ingredients. I only used 1/2 c and it was great. There is no measurement for the salt either 🙂 Thanks for sharing. This was really great!

We made this apple crumble yesterday, but I had to replace the Biscoff cookies with german Kemm´sche Kekse (I hope they are similar to Biscoff). I´ll try it next time with Spekulatius;)
And we drizzled on top your super delicious Autumn Spiced Apple Cider Sauce. Yummy!
    Herzliche Grüße aus Berlin!
